Hello,

I am new to the forum and am looking for advice.

My employer asked if I would assume the role of Privacy Officer for the company. I am looking for a boot camp in the role of the Privacy Officer in regards to HIPAA. Can anyone provide some advice?

Regards,

Jonathan,

First and foremost...welcome to HIPAA-dom.  What's nice is that whether someone is new or not so new...many of the same questions that existed in 2004 (by the way, HIPAA Privacy was implemented nine years ago as luck would have it the anniversary date is Friday the 13th of this month!) are still debated and asked today.  So in some sense, you don't need to feel that you are really that far behind.

In fact, I would say you will benefit from some of the lessons learned that are shared by many folks on this group and others without having to bear some of the bumps and bruises experienced by others.

Secondly, there are a number of good training experiences you may be able to choose from.  In fact that is where I got my start in holding HIPAA Bootcamps starting about 6 years ago.  My original website was HIPAABootcamp.com which I have now expanded to HIPAACollege.com.

I'll send you some info offlist as I want to comply with posting netiquette...but when you are looking, make sure to focus on offerings that are in alignment with your needs.  There are some offerings that provide a very wide scope of exposure to privacy laws of which HIPAA is certainly a subset but often this extra training is not useful in a practical way.

Welcome, Jonathan!  HCCA has some Privacy Academies throughout the year...go to their website for more info.  One academy is in June in San Diego and the October offering is in Orlando, FL.

Jonathan,  Welcome to HCCA and to the world of Privacy.  HCCA is now offering to link mentees with mentors and will be doing this at the HCCA Conference later this month.  This is also an excellent way to meet people who have "been there and done that" and who can save you some time and energy when developing your Privacy Program.

Best to you!

Michelle,

I've heard from others that have experienced this SpeedNetworking and Mentoring exercise that is scheduled for Sunday at the HCCA Institute which I too am scheduled to participate and the responses have been at worst neutral and at best excellent...so I am looking forward to this as well.

Michael Slater, who is a point person for speednetworking.com has been especially helpful answering questions and providing information.  I encourage folks to contact him or those he works with if they are undecided about participating.

Jonathan - Another excellent resource would be the Privacy Acadamies offered by HCCA.  The next one will be in June in San Diego.  They are an excellent "boot camp" initiative as you had requested.  You can find more information at http://www.hcca-info.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Compliance_Academies1&Template=/TaggedPage/TaggedPageDisplay.cfm&TPLID=14&ContentID=6849              Click on Privacy Acadamies.

Good luck.

One option I did not see mentioned is the National HIPAA Summits.  If you search "National HIPAA Summit" you can access their main page and get copies of literally hundreds of presentations going back to 2004 which are still very, very topical!

Also there are a number of online video sessions (many for free) which cover very essential information.  So if one were to set aside an hour a day (either at work or off given all of this is internet based) one could bring themselves up to speed in a relatively reasonable amount of time with the only main investment being the time devoted to such efforts and $0.00.
